The exterior of Kokochi Cafe Musubino is so enticing that anyone passing by would want to stop in.

I take off my shoes at the entrance before stepping up into this Japanese-style cafe-restaurant.

Mr. Kono runs the place single-handedly and apologizes that it takes a little time to serve the food.

It is well worth the wait.

He uses local ingredients and low-temperature cooking to create healthy, exquisite dishes with unique flavors I haven’t found anywhere else.

He moved here from Osaka and joined the local volunteer fire department and a Kannawa walking group, commitments he continues to this day.

He says that in Kannawa, he feels a sense of what people today call ibasho, a true place to belong.

He noticed that while there are many traditional inns in the Kannawa Onsen area, many owners have stopped serving meals as they age.

To support these local businesses, he provides breakfast for their guests.

Rooted in the community and beloved by all, Mr. Kono’s character radiates through every corner of the shop, creating an atmosphere of genuine warmth and comfort.
