I usually feel a bit hesitant walking into a bar located on the second floor, but Snack Aya, a Beppu staple for 15 years, is a spot where I can truly relax and enjoy the night.
As I step inside, I’m greeted by sleek white sofas and a massive karaoke screen.
The pricing gives me peace of mind; it’s a straightforward 3,500 yen (plus tax) for a 90-minute session. They even let me know when my 90 minutes are up, which I find is the secret to their long-standing reputation as a trustworthy business.
Above all, the real draw here is the beautiful “Mama-san” who runs the place.
During my visit, I ask if I can take a photo of her for our website, but she bashfully declines. “Use the one on the site,” she tells me, “I’m not ready for a photo today.” She explains she doesn’t have her full “work makeup” on yet, but even in her glasses, her beauty is striking. It’s easy to see why she has so many local regulars.
